Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Determining Peroxide Value in Oil

Objective: The purpose of this SOP is to provide guidelines for accurately measuring the peroxide value in oil samples. Peroxide value is a crucial parameter used to assess the extent of oxidation and rancidity in oils, which affects their quality and shelf life.

Applicable Standards and References:

  1. AOCS Official Method Cd 8b-90 - Peroxide Value Acetic Acid-Isooctane Method
  2. ASTM D3702 - Standard Test Method for Hydrogen Peroxide Value of Fats and Oils

Materials and Equipment:

  1. Oil samples to be tested
  2. Acetic acid-isooctane solution (3:2 v/v)
  3. Potassium iodide-starch solution
  4. Titration apparatus (burette, pipettes, and conical flask)
  5. Volumetric flasks
  6. Magnetic stirrer and stir bars
  7. Glassware (beakers, test tubes, etc.)
  8. Weighing balance
  9. Distilled water
  10. Safety equipment (lab coat, gloves, goggles)
  11. Waste disposal containers

Procedure:

  1. Preparation of Reagents:

    a. Prepare the acetic acid-isooctane solution by mixing acetic acid and isooctane in a 3:2 ratio by volume. Store the solution in a labeled, tightly sealed container.

    b. Prepare the potassium iodide-starch solution by dissolving potassium iodide and starch in distilled water. Mix until the solution becomes clear and store it in a dark container to avoid degradation.

  2. Sample Preparation:

    a. Ensure that oil samples are at room temperature before analysis.

    b. Mix the oil samples thoroughly to ensure homogeneity.

    c. Weigh accurately 5-10 grams of the oil sample using a clean and dry weighing balance.

  3. Titration Procedure:

    a. Transfer the weighed oil sample to a clean and dry conical flask.

    b. Add 30 mL of the acetic acid-isooctane solution to the flask.

    c. Insert a magnetic stir bar into the flask and place it on a magnetic stirrer.

    d. Stir the mixture gently at room temperature for 1-2 minutes to dissolve the oil.

    e. Remove the flask from the stirrer and add 0.5 mL of the potassium iodide-starch solution.

    f. Immediately titrate the solution with standardized 0.01 N sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3) until the appearance of a pale-yellow color. This indicates the endpoint of the titration.

  4. Calculation:

    a. Calculate the peroxide value (PV) using the following formula:

    PV (meq/kg) = (V * N * 56.1) / W,

    where:

V = volume of sodium thiosulfate used in mL

N = normality of sodium thiosulfate

W = weight of the oil sample in grams

  5. Reporting: Record all observations, calculations, and results in a laboratory notebook or electronic data management system. Report the peroxide value in meq/kg.

  6. Safety Precautions:

    a. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as lab coats, gloves, and goggles.

    b. Work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhalation of volatile solvents.

    c. Handle all chemicals with care, following their Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

    d. Dispose of waste and hazardous materials in designated containers according to laboratory protocols.

Boost productivity with better desktop performance

Improving desktop performance can be a complex task that depends on various factors such as the hardware configuration, operating system, and installed software. However, here are some general steps you can take to optimize your desktop performance:

Step 1: Update your operating system and drivers

  • Make sure your operating system (e.g., Windows, macOS, Linux) is up to date with the latest patches and updates.
  • Update your graphics card drivers and other device drivers to their latest versions. You can usually find driver updates on the manufacturer's website.

Step 2: Remove unnecessary startup programs

  • Open the Task Manager (press Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and navigate to the "Startup" tab.
  • Disable any programs that you don't need to start automatically with your computer. Right-click on the program and choose "Disable."

Step 3: Remove unnecessary software

  • Uninstall any software programs that you no longer use or need. Go to the Control Panel (Windows) or Applications folder (macOS) to uninstall the software.

Step 4: Optimize your hard drive or SSD

  • For traditional hard drives, run the built-in disk defragmentation tool (Windows) or optimize tool (macOS) to reorganize data on the disk for faster access.
  • For solid-state drives (SSDs), enable TRIM support (if not already enabled) to improve performance and longevity. This is typically done automatically on modern operating systems.

Step 5: Adjust visual effects and settings

  • On Windows, go to Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings > Performance Settings. Choose "Adjust for best performance" or manually disable specific visual effects.
  • On macOS, go to System Preferences > Dock > uncheck "Animate opening applications."

Step 6: Increase virtual memory (Windows)

  • Virtual memory, also known as the page file, helps manage system memory when RAM is running low. Adjusting its size can help improve performance.
  • Go to Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings > Performance Settings > Advanced tab > Virtual memory. Adjust the size or let Windows manage it automatically.

Step 7: Scan for malware and viruses

  • Run a full system scan using an updated antivirus or anti-malware software to ensure your system is free from any malicious programs.

Step 8: Restart your computer regularly

  • Restarting your computer can help clear temporary files, free up system resources, and resolve any software conflicts that may be affecting performance.

Please note that these steps provide general guidelines and may not address specific performance issues related to your desktop setup. It's always a good idea to consult official documentation or seek assistance from a technical expert if you encounter persistent performance problems.
